This summer, I had two very magical interactions with birds. One was walking in the park and coming upon a baby raven in the path. It was alive but not doing well. I called Animal Care and Control and waited for them. Unfortunately it died upon their arrival. The ACC folks said the parents knew there was something wrong, otherwise they would've attacked me (and them) when I was getting close to it; they carefully took the baby with them and left. @melociity provided some reasonable explanation, along with the validation that feelings, much of the time, can be un-reasonable- and, to have witnessed this fact of nature along with a lot of other heavy feelings, I just stood there and cried for that little bird.

The other instance was, knowing a bird family had built a nest in our olive tree, I was still surprised one day while reading out there, to hear some rustling and realize one of the fledglings was in the rosebush right next to me. Again I worried and called the most reliable local ACC who told me the baby bird was learning to be a bird and I needed to leave it alone. Sure enough, once I left the vicinity, we heard the parents making a huge racket around the tree, and then the next day, everyone was gone- literally flown the nest. A month went by and I retrieved the nest from our olive tree. So precious and perfect.
