Antique "gunmetal" is prized and collectible. Gunmetal Jewelry has roots in the early 1800s, made popular when Prussia was resisting Napoleon's French Empire. The upper class was asked to donate their precious jewelry to support the war efforts. The wearing of cast-iron jewelry (gunmetal), made of such humble materials, was considered an act of patriotism. Also called "Berlin Iron," it was originally considered mourning jewelry, and clearly set a foundation for the steampunk and goth jewelry seen far off  in the next century.
