In ancient Egyptian mythology, the scarab beetle was a powerful symbol of rebirth, renewal, transformation, and growth.

The beetle would lay its eggs in a ball of dung, which it would then roll ahead of it, much like the sun rising and moving across the sky- inspiring the god Khepri, who was often depicted with the head of a scarab. Khepri was the sun god associated with the sunrise.

Most species of scarab beetles also feed on manure, which is why they are often referred to as  dung beetles.
